12-year-old boy seriously injured in Cork hit-and-run

Gardaí in Cork are searching for the driver of a car involved in a hit-and-run in the city last night, which resulted in a 12-year-old boy being hospitalised.

The incident happened on Thomas Davis Street in Blackpool at about 9.50pm when the boy was struck by a car as he was crossing the road near the bridge close to the former post-office.

The car, which had a number of passengers on board, failed to stop and continued on towards the city centre after the incident, which was witnessed by members of the boy’s family.

The boy, a member of the Roma community, was rushed by family members in their car to Mercy University Hospital. It is believed that his injuries are serious but not life-threatening.

Gardaí were notified and the road was closed for a period to allow a Garda forensic crash investigator to examine the scene.

Officers also began examining CCTV footage in the area as well as along Watercourse Road and other possible routes which the car could have taken after it passed through the centre of Blackpool.
