Ireland triumphed in the final of the inaugural International Cup of Australian football today, defeating favourites Papua New Guinea at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Having overcome New Zealand on the way to today’s final, played as a curtain-raiser to a match between the Hawthorn and Kangaroos clubs, the Irish team ran out handsome winners with a total if 51 points to 19.
A total of 11 teams competed in the tournament including; Great Britain, Denmark, Nauru, Japan, USA, Samoa, Canada and South Africa. Ironically Australia did not enter the event which is aimed at promoting Aussie Rules on a worldwide platform.
