Ireland continued their successful run by reaching final of the inaugural Australian Rules World Cup by defeating New Zealand in today’s semi-final.
Ireland will now go into Friday’s final at the MCG in Melbourne as the favourites where they take on Papua New Giunea.
A total of 11 teams competed in the tournament including; Great Britain, Denmark, Nauru, Japan, USA, Samoa, Canada and South Africa. Ironically Australia did not enter the event which is aimed at promoting Aussie Rules on a worldwide platform.
The achievements of Damien Cassidy’s men prompted a congratulatory message from the Taoiseach today:
"I want to send my heartiest congratulations to Damien Cassidy, (manager), Darren Fitzpatrick (coach) and all the players in the Aussie Rules squad on their qualification for the final next Friday."
"We celebrate your achievement and I wish all concerned the very best of luck in the final."
