Turnout in Iraq's parliamentary election last week was nearly 70 per cent, the Electoral Commission said today, citing provisional data.

Commission chairman Hussein al-Hindawi told a news conference that 10,893,413 voters took part on Thursday, putting national turnout at 69.97 per cent,.

Only 58 per cent participated in January's ballot and 64 per cent for the constitutional referendum held in October.
