Iran said today it was opposed to any US military strike on Iraq as part of Washington's "war on terrorism".

"We believe that attacking Iraq or any other country on the pretext of fighting terrorism does not solve any of the world's problems", Iranian Vice President Mr Mohammed Abtahi told reporters in Beirut.
US President Mr George W. Bush has branded Iraq, Iran and North Korea an "axis of evil" that is seeking to acquire weapons of mass destruction.
But US Secretary of State Mr Colin Powell said last week the United States had no plan to attack Iran or Iraq, despite rising speculation about an imminent US strike on Iraq.
Iran and Iraq have recently held high-level talks and swapped remains of soldiers killed in their 1980-1988 war as part of an effort to improve bilateral relations.
