Washington - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed yesterday that it has filed a lawsuit in the US federal court against more than 1,800 unauthorised Olympic websites. The IOC claims the websites are infringing its "property rights" by planning to broadcast "pirate" coverage of the Sydney games.

The IOC denied the crackdown was motivated by a desire to protect its lucrative television contract with US broadcaster NBC.
