Government officials are aiding the family of a young Irishman who has died in Thailand, it was confirmed today.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said the close relations of the man have been informed.

The man, whose name has not been released, is believed to be in his 20s and from the Co Meath area. Thai police are investigating but the circumstances of the death have not been revealed.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign Affairs Department said it was standard practice for Thai police to probe the death of any foreigner in Thailand.

The Irish embassy in Malaysia is assisting the family.
