Gardaí in Limerick are investigating a suspected arson attack on the home of a teenager charged with an incident in which two young Moyross children were seriously burned.
Millie Murray (6) and her brother Gavin (4) suffered horrific burns when their car was set on fire outside a house in Moyross last month. Two 17-year-old youths, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, were charged with intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm to the children at Pineview Gardens, Moyross.
The emergency services were alerted shortly after 9am when fire broke out in an upstairs bedroom. The house, in Pineview Gardens, was unoccupied at the time.
GAA stars on aid mission to Malawi
Some of Ireland's best- known sporting personalities yesterday flew to Malawi as part of a group of 60 volunteers on a humanitarian aid mission to an impoverished village.
Former GAA president Seán Kelly is joined on the charity trip by Gaelic games figures John Maughan, Barney Rock, Robbie O'Malley, Johnny Flaherty, Angela Downey, Marty McGrath, Gregory McCartan, Éamon O'Hara, Marcella Heffernan and Nuala Ó Sé. They have been signed up by Playing for Life, the Third World charity established by RTÉ broadcaster Tracy Piggott.
Milk plant in Ballina to close
Connacht Gold has announced it is to cease manufacturing at its liquid milk plant in Ballina, Co Mayo, effective from the middle of January.
The company's office at the same location, dealing with sales and distribution, will remain open. The milk handled in Ballina will transfer to the company's milk processing plant in Sligo.
Dead dolphins on Mayo beach
Two dead dolphins were washed ashore at Elly Bay in north Mayo yesterday. Both are likely to have been part of a larger group that were returned to the water earlier this week after they became beached in Belmullet.
Man charged over defective bus
A judge has ordered the owner of a bus company, which carries children to school, to have his buses examined by the AA after one of the buses was found to be seriously defective.
Judge David Anderson, at Enniscorthy District Court, Co Wexford on Tuesday, said Tommy Roche should not be operating public service vehicles and that his statements in relation to child safety could not possibly be genuine.
Mr Roche, Farmleigh, Enniscorthy, and Carnew Road, Ferns, was charged with being the owner of a defective vehicle on October 8th, 2004, at Blackstoops, Enniscorthy. The judge adjourned penalties to November 8th.
