Gardaí and Iarnród Éireann have begun separate investigations into the death of a man who was struck by a train yesterday evening.

The man in his 50s died at 7.30pm after he was hit by the Galway-Dublin train near Ballinasloe, Galway.

The incident happened at Creagh, about two miles from Ballinasloe.

The train, which had 200 passengers on board, was stopped at the scene for about two hours.
