Innocent citizens had nothing to fear from the referendum on bail, the national director of the Fianna Fail campaign, Mr John O'Donoghue, said yesterday. Mr O'Donoghue said many of those opposed to the bail referendum "clearly do not understand what it is about". "There has been an inordinate amount of scaremongering in recent days in relation to the referendum. It has clouded sensible, sound and positive debate on this critical issue. Loose and unsound talk has homed in on the issue of the fundamental right of an individual to his/her liberty," he said.

Mr O'Donoghue added: "This fundamental right will not be diminished with the passing of the bail referendum. Only criminals will have something to fear."
