Gardaí have appealed to anyone who might know something about the death of an Irish man in Gran Canaria in April to come forward.
Daniel O'Callaghan (24), from Rathmines, Dublin was found with serious head injuries in Playa Del Ingles in the early hours of Sunday, April 27th.
The telecommunications worker had only arrived on the island hours beforehand and had gone out with three friends for the night. At about 2.30 a.m. Daniel left his friends to go home. Nothing was known of his movements until he was found at about 4 a.m, unconscious in a laneway between the Greenfield and Green Garden Apartments.
It appeared that he had been mugged as his wallet was missing. He died as a result of his head injuries on May 13th, in a Gran Canaria hospital. His parents, Dennis and Maeve O'Callaghan, who had flown to the island after the attack, were with their son when he died.
Afterwards, the Spanish police said they were looking for the gang they believe carried out the attack and hoped to be in a position to issue a statement within days. The case does not seem to have progressed since then and gardaí were recently asked for assistance from the Spanish authorities. They have taken statements from several people who were on the island at that time.
Garda spokesman, Supt John Farrelly said no suspect had emerged in the case yet, almost five months after the attack.
He said the appeal was being made here because there would have been a lot of Irish people on holiday in the area at that time and they may have seen something and not realised the significance of it. He also appealed to young Irish people working in the area for the summer months to come forward if they had any information.
Investigating officers want to hear from anybody who saw Daniel and his friends on that night. They have also appealed for help from anyone who may have seen Daniel between 2.30 a.m. and 4 a.m. or anyone who heard any activity in the laneway between Greenfield and Green Garden Apartments between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m.
