A summary of today's Irish news stories in brief

Irish student (20) in hospital after Russian assault

An Irish student has been taken to hospital with head injuries following an assault in the southern Russian city of Krasnodar, writes Aaron Mulvihill in Moscow.

The 20-year-old Cambridge University student was struck on the head three times with a hammer by a local resident on Saturday, according to testimony he gave to police.

“According to a statement provided by the victim, who is currently in hospital, there was an altercation between him and the accused on Saturday in a garage in the Yubilee region of the city,” an interior ministry press official said yesterday. “The reason for the conflict is not yet clear.”

The accused, a 21-year-old man, is in police custody.

At the Irish Embassy in Moscow, staff had joined Irish public sector employees in strike action. However, they confirmed that the Irish Ambassador had begun an investigation.

One killed and two injured in head-on crash

One man died and two were injured in a two-car crash near Ballyshannon, Co Donegal, last evening. The collision occurred at about 6pm at Cavangarden crossroads on the N15, 4km north of Ballyshannon.

Ballyshannon town councillor Billy Grimes, who arrived on the scene a few minutes later, said eyewitnesses told him one car exited from a side road and the driver on the main road could not avoid a head-on collision.

The dead man was named locally as James Kerrigan, in his late 50s.

His wife Mary was seriously injured. The teenage male driver of the other car, a Toyota Starlet, was also injured.

Both were taken to Sligo General Hospital.

Hasbro to seek further redundancies

Hasbro, the Waterford-based toys and games manufacturer, is to seek further redundancies, writes Ella Shanahan.

Management told staff yesterday afternoon that 22 jobs may go, but Siptu, which represents the workers, says it has been asked only for a meeting with management.

Hasbro, an international company that makes high-end toys and games, was established in Waterford in 1977. It employs about 300 people.

Some 100 jobs were lost at the company three years ago.

Man charged over PSNI murder attempt

A MAN has been charged in connection with the suspected planned murder of a Catholic police officer in Garrison, Co Fermanagh, on Saturday.

The 32-year-old was charged with attempted murder and possession of a firearm and ammunition.

A second man remains in custody while three others were earlier released without charge.
