Anglo settles £12m loan case
Anglo Irish Bank has settled proceedings against an Isle of Man businessman who is suing former Irish rugby manager Pat Whelan and another Limerick businessman for £12 million (€13 million) in connection with a loan for the proposed redevelopment of the Odeon Cinema site in London.
Anglo had argued it had a priority claim on the loan, and it had sought to prevent businessman Frank Woods proceeding with his Commercial Court summary judgement claim against Mr Whelan and the other man for the £12 million.
12 months for Revenue fraud
A middle-aged man in a "cartel" who defrauded the Revenue of almost €53,000 has been jailed for 12 months at Dublin circuit criminal court.
Karl Holmes (38) is the 32nd person to be prosecuted over the scam. Another 58 suspects are due before the courts.
Mr Holmes, of Home Lawn Drive, Tallaght, pleaded guilty to two counts of defrauding the Revenue Commissioners. Sgt Michael McKenna said Mr Holmes owed €5,000 to the unnamed man who suggested he repay it by engaging in the scam and recruiting others.
Former boxing star accused of assault
Former world boxing champion Eamonn Magee appeared in court yesterday accused of separate assaults on a man and woman.
Mr Magee (38) was remanded on continuing bail of £500 and ordered to have no contact with either alleged victim. The ex-WBU welterweight title holder is charged with assaulting a woman in the north of the city on September 22nd. He also faces a separate charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm against a man a month earlier.
Man gets 6 years for storing guns
A Dublin man who stored guns out of "misguided loyalty" has received a six-year sentence with three years suspended.
Joseph McCormack (43), of Knowth Court, Ballymun, pleaded guilty to holding two shotguns, a pistol and 27 rounds of ammunition.
Judge Frank O'Donnell told McCormack: "People like you are an essential part of the crime industry." McCormack had no previous convictions.
Accused of rape as husband slept
A Dublin man has gone on trial at the Central Criminal Court accused of raping a woman as she slept in her bed while her husband slept downstairs.
The 26-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to raping the woman in west Dublin on July 23rd, 2007.
The woman said in evidence that she went to bed soon after she got home and awoke to find someone having sex with her.
