Man (22) given six-year sentence for aggravated burglary
A man has been given a six-year sentence for his part in an aggravated burglary.
David Cummins (22), Cherry Park, Swords, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to aggravated burglary at Shangan Road on November 29th, 2009. The last three years of his sentence was suspended.
His co-accused, William Brennan (22), Whiteacre Close, Ballymun, was sentenced to six years with the last two suspended on December 20th, 2010.
Det Garda Ronan McMorrow told Cormac Quinn, prosecuting, that Brennan and Cummins arrived at the house of a woman, looking for her partner. Cummins held a bottle in a threatening manner over the man’s head while Brennan had an empty bottle in his hand.
Agency-nurse pay dispute continues
Hospitals and some community services around the country remained under pressure yesterday as nursing staff supplied by agencies to the Health Service Executive (HSE) again made themselves unavailable to work on lower rates of pay, writes Martin Wall.
The HSE said last night that about 50 agency nurses did not present for work. However, unions were sceptical about the figures.
Elective surgery is again expected to be cancelled at Cavan General Hospital today and the HSE said this option was also being considered elsewhere.
The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation said services had been affected in Cavan, Tullamore, Limerick and Cork.
Man stabbed after trying to stop theft
A man who tried to stop a group of youths from allegedly trying to steal the tyres from his son’s car is recovering in hospital after he was attacked by a group of up to seven youths and stabbed eight times.
One male teenager (18) yesterday appeared at the District Court in Waterford charged with assault of the man (50) causing him harm outside his house in Hillview on Friday last.
Bail terms were agreed for the youth yesterday, before the proceedings were further adjourned.
Six other males aged between 17 and 20 were arrested and released without charge from Garda questioning yesterday, while files are being prepared by for the DPP in respect of these youths.
