€2,000 spent with found credit card

A man spent more than €2,000 on household bills, flights and accommodation using a credit card he found in a nightclub, Galway District Court heard yesterday.

Patrick Grealish (35), Knocknacarra, was bailed to April 30th to give him a chance to pay €500 compensation.

 400-year-old cottage renovation delayed

A 400-year-old country cottage near Raphoe, Co Donegal, which is undergoing renovation, has been targeted by thieves. A caravan was to be sold to fund the next stage of the project – a thatched roof.

Last weekend thieves broke into the home of Helen and Ian Holyoak and stole the 22ft caravan, worth about €10,000.

500,000 calves electronically registered

Figures show that more than half a million calves were electronically registered last year using a Department of Agriculture online service.

The success of the Animal Identification and Movement system, which records births and movement of animals, has been lauded by Minister for Agriculture Brendan Smith.

He said since last July, 5,000 farmers had signed up to use the online herd register. This removes them from the requirement to maintain the on-farm bovine herd register, commonly known as “the blue book”.
