Cork gardaí investigating head injuries to twin babies

Gardaí in Co Cork have launched an investigation after they were contacted by social services about three-month-old twins brought to hospital with head and other injuries.

Officers launched the investigation last weekend when one of the twins from Co Cork was taken to Cork University Hospital (CUH) where he was diagnosed with brain bleeds.

The baby, who was in a serious condition, was transferred to Temple Street Children’s Hospital, Dublin, where he was put on a ventilator and where he remains in a critical condition.

Gardaí called to the babies’ family home in a rural part of Co Cork where they spoke to the babies teenage parents and their grandparents. The second twin was later admitted to CUH on January 9th last when it was discovered he too had suffered brain bleeds.

Fatal fire not suspicious

Gardaí have said they are not treating as suspicious a fire that claimed an elderly woman’s life after it broke out shortly before 10am on Saturday in the home she shared with her brother.

The house at Kerrytown, near Annagry, Co Donegal, remained sealed off yesterday for technical examination and gardaí were still trying to establish the precise cause. Nellie Rodgers (80) was found dead in a porch at the front entrance.

A postmortem was due to be carried out yesterday at Letterkenny General Hospital. Her brother, Dan, also in his 80s, survived the fire and was treated in hospital for smoke inhalation after he raised the alarm.

DPP to get file on alleged rape

Gardaí in north Cork are to send a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) after questioning a 21-year-old man about a reported rape of a teenage girl in Mallow over the Christmas period.

The man was arrested at his home in north Cork on Saturday afternoon and brought to Mallow Garda station for questioning. The girl had made a complaint of rape by a man, whom she met that night, at a car park in Mallow between 2am and 3am on December 27th. Gardaí arrested the man after an inquiry, including study of CCTV footage. He was released at 11pm on Saturday without charge and a file will be prepared for the DPP.
