Four arrested over murder of Lithuanian man
Gardaí detained three men aged 31, 26 and 24 and one woman aged 32 in connection with the death of Lithuanian man Paulus Bilys (31)
Gardaí were called to a house at Pheasant’s Run, Dublin 15 on the evening of June 25th after receiving a report that a man’s body had been discovered by other residents of the house.
It was initially thought he had suffered a sudden death but a postmortem revealed that he had died of head injuries.
The victim had been living at the Pheasant’s Run property.
All four people arrested were being held at Finglas and Blanchardstown under section four of the Criminal Justice Act.
Four held over Pearse St murders
Four people were still being held last night in relation the the murder of two men at Pearse Street on Sunday.
Paddy Mooney(58) was shot in his home at Pearse House just before 7pm along with Brendan Molyneux, aged in his mid-40s.
Three men and a woman were arrested on Sunday evening in connection with the incident. Two were arrested in Dublins south inner city, while another two were held in Finglas.
Three of those being held are in their 20s, while one of the men is in his 40s.
They are being detained under Section 50 of the Offences Against the State Act and can be held for up to seven days without charge.
Only one of the victims is believed to have been the killers’ target.
Judgment reserved in Carmody trial
The High Court has reserved judgment on an application by a former doctor to halt his trial on charges of defrauding a number of terminally ill cancer patients.
The DPP rejected the claims by Paschal Carmody (61), with an address at Killaloe, Co Clare, that his right to a fair trial has been prejudiced on various grounds, including a witness who has died.
Mr Carmody is charged with obtaining money from terminally ill cancer patients and their families by deception at the East Clinic in Killaloe.
Yesterday, Mr Justice John Hedigan reserved judgment on Mr Carmody’s judicial review proceedings.
Man faces assault charge on woman
A Dundalk man convicted of the manslaughter of his wife in Spain nearly 10 years ago yesterday appeared in court again to face a charge of assaulting a female photographer.
It is alleged Dermot McArdle (41) of Brookfield, Marlbog Road, Dundalk assaulted Jenny Matthews contrary to section 2 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the State Act. It is also alleged that at the same time and location he stole a Canon EOS 30d camera and 150m lense valued at €2,000 – the property of Ms Matthews.
His solicitor said he was waiting for the DPP to make a decision and asked for the case to be adjourned. Judge Flann Brennan adjourned the case to April 14th .
Phone services to 17,000 restored
Broadband and phone services were being reconnected to 17,000 subscribers in counties Cavan and Monaghan last night after fibre optic cables were cut during a robbery.
Eircom said its technicians expected to have reconnected all affected customers by late last night after thieves severed the cables in Scotshouse, Co Monaghan.
Gardaí say the cables were cut by the gang in order to disconnect the alarm on a shop in the village. An unknown quantity of cigarettes and cash from the till were taken in the raid, which happened yesterday.
