Two remanded over ramming of patrol car
Two Dublin men arrested after a Garda patrol car was rammed in Clonshaugh, Co Dublin, last Wednesday, have been remanded in custody to appear at Clover Hill District Court on Wednesday.
Paul Beatty (22), East Wall and Gerard Byrne (18), Spencer Dock, were brought before the Bridewell District Court on Saturday morning, charged with possession of a Magnum revolver.
Mr Byrne was also charged with using a stolen car and Mr Beatty with being carried in a stolen car. Legal aid was granted to both men.
Meath man killed in Perth crash
A Co Meath man has died in Perth, western Australia, after a road crash.
The man, believed to be in his early 20s, was travelling in a car with three other men, also thought to be from Co Meath.
The Department of Foreign Affairs was not available to provide details last night and details of the crash were sketchy.
News reports said the man was a front-seat passenger in the car which was involved in a two car collision in east Perth at about 06.30am on Saturday.
Woman killed in crash named
Gardaí in Belturbet, Co Cavan, have named the 35-year-old woman driver killed in a road traffic collision last Wednesday.
She was Ivironke Dawodu, from The Gallops, Latt, Co Cavan.
The collision occurred at Kilduff, Belturbet, and involved a car and a van. Three men in the van were take to Cavan General Hospital with minor injuries.
‘Irish Times’ writers honoured
Three Irish Times writers have been honoured by their peers and the travel industry as “travel writers of the year”.
Deirdre McQuillan won in the “winter sun” category for her feature on St Lucia in the Go travel supplement, at the Travel Extra Journalist of the Year awards in Dublin on Friday night.
Her award was sponsored by Panorama Holidays.
Laurence Mackin, a columnist with Go, was winner of the “short breaks” category, sponsored by Emerald Star, for his article on Warsaw, Poland.
In the ski category, the writer of the year was Mal Rogers, for a piece on Kandersteg, Switzerland.
Kathryn Thomas, presenter of No Frontiers, the RTÉ television travel programme, was named best broadcaster. The winners were chosen by a panel of Irish journalists. The overall travel writer of the year award was presented to Pól Ó Conghaile of the Irish Independent Saturday magazine.
