PSNI inquiry into racist link in bomb attack

Police in the North are looking at a possible racist link to a petrol bomb attack on a house occupied by members of the Polish community.

Two petrol bombs were thrown at the house in Charcoal Way, Cullybackey, in north Antrim at about 1.45am yesterday.

The devices caused minor scorch damage to a window.

Four people were inside the house - three of them were Polish.

The PSNI was also investigating arson attacks on two cars yesterday in Newtownabbey on the outskirts of Belfast.

A Mazda car was set alight in the first incident at about midnight, and two hours later a Renault was also destroyed in a blaze. Police again were investigating a racist motive. - (PA)

FG, Lab to hold Wexford seats

Fine Gael and Labour should hold three out of the five seats in Wexford, a new opinion poll suggests, writes Liam Reid, Political Reporter.

The poll of the constituency, by TNS mrbi for Nuacht TG4, also shows a relatively strong performance for Fianna Fáil, but suggests the party will need better vote management if it is to ensure that it holds on to its two seats there.

The opinion poll also shows a poor performance for abuse survivor rights campaigner and Progressive Democrats candidate Colm O'Gorman, who would be eliminated on the first count if the poll figures were replicated in a general election. Just 1 per cent of the 500 people surveyed will vote for Mr O'Gorman, according to the poll.

Man faces charge on Keady arson

A 43-year-old man is due to appear at Newry Magistrates Court today charged in connection with the arson attack at Tassagh near Keady, Co Armagh a week ago, which left one man dead and a woman seriously injured.

The man was yesterday charged by the PSNI with perverting the course of justice and withholding information about the arson attack last Monday night.

The attack claimed the life of 33-year-old Thomas O'Hare, who died in the Royal Victoria Hospital from burn injuries after he was doused with flammable liquid and set alight.

Local and political sources said Mr O'Hare had at least one conviction for sex abuse of a child or minor and that he was suspected of being involved in other similar offences.

The PSNI would not comment other than to say it had no information that the man was "involved in any criminality at this moment".
