Arise Lord Trimble of Lisnagarvey
The former leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, David Trimble, formally accepted a seat in the British House of Lords yesterday.
He was introduced by his sponsors, Lord Rogan and Lord Steinberg, and will be known as Lord Trimble of Lisnagarvey, in reference to a townland in Lisburn.
On taking the oath, Lord Trimble joined more than 700 other peers.
Body found in Belfast cemetery
The PSNI said it was not treating as murder at this time the death of a man whose body was discovered in Carnmoney Cemetery, north Belfast, yesterday. Police said inquiries were continuing into the death of the man, who was not named.
Women charged with disorder
Two women and a man were charged with public order offences at Kilkenny District Court yesterday following disturbances at a funeral in the city last month. Ellen Delaney (46), Gaol Street, Kilkenny, was charged with offences under Section 6 of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act. Her case was adjourned until September 5th.
Josephine Murray (22), Norelands Road, Stoneyford, faced similar charges but failed to turn up in court. Judge William Harnett issued a warrant for her arrest. Charges against James Delaney (18), Gaol Road, were withdrawn.
Grenade found in Bray garden
Members of the Army bomb disposal unit were last night examining an unexploded grenade found by a resident in Bray, Co Wicklow. The area around the house in Sugarloaf Crescent was sealed off when the device was found. An examination revealed it contained no explosive material. A spokesman for the Defence Forces said the device dated from after the second World War.
Son tries to burn father alive
A man doused in petrol and set on fire by his son outside a pub in Co Offaly early on Sunday morning was recovering in a Dublin hospital last night. The 57-year-old victim and his wife went for a drink in a Tullamore pub on Saturday night. When the couple left the pub around 1.20am, their son, aged 26, doused petrol on his father and set him alight.
The victim's wife sustained burns to her own hands as she tried to extinguish the flames.
The son was detained at the scene and has since been transferred to a psychiatric hospital. A spokeswoman for St James's Hospital said his victim was in a comfortable condition.
Two more killed in road crashes
Gardaí last night named the driver who was fatally injured at Scartana, Ballylooby, Cahir, as Thomas O'Connor (45), Clogheen, Co Tipperary.
In Co Clare, a man in his 20s died when the car he was driving struck a tree on Monday night at Clonboy, Bridgetown.
Man jailed for indecent assault
A self-confessed child killer was yesterday jailed for six years for indecently assaulting a woman while out on licence.
Patrick Noel Coleman (53), jailed for life in 1975 for the murder of eight-year-old Barbara Leatham in Lurgan, Co Armagh, was returned to prison for the fourth time.
