The State’s largest public sector union has said national pay rises and tax cuts under partnership deals could become a thing of the past.
Mr Peter McLoone, general secretary of the 40,000 member IMPACT union, told their annual conference in Ennis, Co Clare, that demands for improved public services would limit the scope for future tax cuts.
He pointed to growing hostility among a growing section of his membership to a continuation of social partnership.
"Workers believe that, although the economy is in boom, the benefits are not coming back in equal measure to those who made sacrifices during the bad days of pay freezes and cuts in public services," he said.
Public servants were seeking a system of basic pay rises to compensate for cost of living increases with changes in productivity and services marked by local pay negotiations, Mr McLoone said.
