The board of the Irish Museum of Modern Art has agreed to seek a compromise solution to the row over the advertising of the post of director.

The issue whether the director's post, currently held by Mr Declan McGonagle, should be advertised, or automatically filled for another five years by Mr McGonagle, was the sole matter considered at last night's board meeting.

Museum sources expressed optimism that a compromise could be found. This could involve the reappointment of Mr McGonagle. Last Friday, Mr McGonagle obtained a High Court injunction preventing the museum from advertising the post.

A full court hearing is scheduled for later this month.
