Irish Life & Permanent is to donate €100,000 to the Irish Red Cross Asia disaster appeal, the company has announced.

The company said it would give the money to the Irish Red Cross to support relief efforts following the devastation caused by Sunday's earthquake and tsunami.

Group chief executive Mr David Went said the donation was being made in light of the "extraordinary devastation" caused by this week's disaster.

"The devastation caused by this week's events has been beyond imagination. We hope that this gesture reflects the distress which everyone in the group feels at what has unfolded and our support and admiration for the extraordinary efforts of so many aid agencies involved in the rescue and recovery operations," he said.

IL&P is the holding company for the Irish Life, Permanent TSB bank and Irish Life Investment Managers.
