Calls have been made for the microchips for all dogs following a series of savage attacks on sheep in Galway in recent weeks which has caused severe financial losses for farmers.

The National Animal Health Committee of the Irish Farmers' Association is looking at the possibility of recommending the microchipping of dogs to improve traceability.

Last week a Monaghan landowner hung a dog from his farmyard gate after he shot the animal while it was attacking his sheep.
