The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (Ictu) is expected to recommend the appointment of an ombudsman for migrant workers when its biennial conference starts in Belfast later today.

The issue is one of a number of motions to be considered by trade union leaders.

A separate motion will criticise the "widespread abuse and exploitation" of migrant workers in the construction industry.

The Ictu motion stems from criticism of the approach by many employers to the immigrant employees.
