At least 500 of Fianna Fáil's pro-Nice Treaty posters which were put up on lamposts since the start of the campaign have "gone missing", the party has claimed, as the battle for the votes of the undecided enters its final days.

At every election, almost all parties complain of their posters being torn down and replaced by those of their opponents, but a senior Fianna Fáil member who did not want to be named yesterday said: "I have never seen anything as systematic as this."

The posters, which cost €9 each, have gone missing particularly in the Dublin area, along the main Blackrock road and into Dún Laoghaire as well as Dublin South-Central and Dublin North.

Fianna Fáil's Nice campaign budget is €500,000.
