London - Cardinal Basil Hume has been asked to stay on as head of the Catholic Church in England and Wales by Pope John Paul, it was announced yesterday.
Cardinal Hume had tendered his resignation at the beginning of the month, because he had reached the age of 75. But the Pope did not accept the resignation and it is believed that the cardinal will stay on until the year 2000.
