Human bones found during road excavations in north Co Donegal have brought a road-widening scheme to a standstill until the site is examined by an archaeologist.

Donegal County Council workmen uncovered the human remains on Wednesday morning while excavating the main road in Fahan just outside St Mura's graveyard, which dates back to the seventh century.

Gardai were called and the bones were removed and sent to Dublin for examination by Assistant State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy.

An initial investigation has revealed the bones are more than 100 years old. The workmen made the find as they were lowering the level of the road next to the graveyard where St Mura's Cross is located.
