Gardaí are investigating an apparent petrol bomb attack on a house in Co Longford last night.

Gardaí were called to the scene of the attack near Edgeworthstown at around 9.50pm after receiving a report of smoke coming from a house in the area.

The Army's bomb disposal squad was called to the scene after a suspicious device was found.

The Army later described the device as an "elaborate hoax".

The N4 Dublin to Sligo road was closed for a number of hours before the all-clear was given.

A viable device was made safe by the Army at the same house in February.
