London - About 5,000 patients die every year from infections they pick up in British hospitals, costing the National Health Service up to £1 billion a year, a parliamentary report said yesterday.

The fact that many health care workers are not washing their hands is a big part of the problem, the report by the house of Commons Public Accounts Committee said.
