The Southern Health Board has restricted visits to family members of patients at two Cork hospitals following an outbreak of the winter vomiting bug.

Up to 20 cases of the highly contagious condition have been recorded in the past week at Cork University Hospital and St Mary's Orthopaedic Hospital.

Symptoms include abdominal pains, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Consultant medical microbiologist Dr Bartley Cryan said the current outbreak was being carefully managed and confined to two separate wards.

Adults who have experienced symptoms of the virus have been asked to wait 72 hours before making any planned hospital visits.
