Visits to Temple Street children’s hospital in Dublin are being limited to parents and guardians in a bid to protect patients from infections.

Management at the hospital said it was also discouraging parents from bringing children to the emergency department if a visit to their GP would suffice.

“An increasing number of children have been admitted to Temple Street Children’s University Hospital in recent weeks with infections that tend to be more common during the winter months,” it said.

“These infections are usually mild in people outside of hospital, but can be severe if they spread among children already in hospital.”
