A four to five mile wide areas of mountain bogland was on fire in Co Galway early today, causing the fire service and gardai to evacuate houses and livestock that were under threat.

The fire, in the Furbo area of Connemara, started around 6 p.m. yesterday. Fire engines from Galway City, Loughrea, Tuam and Athenry were involved in fighting the blaze.

There were no reports of an injuries.
