Homeless man found dead in Dublin

Gardaí have ruled out foul play in the death of a man whose body was found by the roadside on a busy street in Stoneybatter, Dublin, yesterday morning.

The man, believed to have been in his early 50s, was found by two teenage girls at around 11 a.m. near the junction of Prussia Street and Aughrim Street.

The man's body was covered in two blankets on a piece of waste ground just outside the entrance to a car-park.

Gardaí said he was homeless, and it is understood he had been living rough in the area for several weeks. It is believed he may have died in his sleep at the scene.

Local sources said the man's family was originally from the North Circular Road.

Labour's Mr Joe Costello TD, in whose constituency the man died, said the death was particularly tragic because Easter was a time of family celebration.

"It's awful to think that he died here with just two dirty blankets over him.

"We're a very wealthy country - there's enough money so that nobody should be homeless. The fact that somebody has died on the side of the street is unacceptable," he said.
