A member of the international body on decommissioning described last night's bombing as the work of people "for whom armed violence is the only way of life".
Mr Harri Holkeri, a former prime minister and one members of the international body on decommissioning chaired by former US Senator George Mitchell, said he was surprised to hear that RTE had received an IRA statement announcing the end of the ceasefire.
"There have been quiet but strengthening signals that a peace accord may be at hand," he said on Finnish television. "This may have made certain groups of people nervous, the kind of people for whom armed violence is the only way of life.
"For some, it may be distasteful to have come so close to a (peace) agreement," he said without elaborating.
