Martina Hingis has ruled out a return to top-flight tennis, saying it would be "unimaginable".

The 22-year-old has suffered from an ankle injury for the last year.

She told a French newspaper today that she was no longer able to play at the top level. "A return to competition is unimaginable. But there you go . . . it is finished. Life goes on".

The former world number one returned to competition last August after surgery in May, but the ankle injury continued to trouble her.
