Two British army helicopters may have penetrated as much as five miles south of the Border in an incursion on Thursday, according to a Co Louth Fianna Fail councillor.

Mr Miceal O'Donnell said he had received telephone calls from six people who had seen the helicopters closer to Dundalk that had originally been thought. They had been seen at Newtownbalregan, just outside the Dundalk urban area on the Castleblayney road, he said last night. He would raise the matter with the Department of Foreign Affairs.
