Tesco recalls fajita meal kits over presence of nuts

A Tesco fajita meal kit has been recalled because of the presence of nuts in the seasoning mix.

Tesco Ireland said almond protein was detected in the seasoning mix and was not declared on the label of its Tesco Fajitas Meal Kit.

“These batches may be unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of almond or its constituents,” the supermarket chain said in a statement.

Aldi last week recalled batches of a Fiesta Fajita Dinner Kit due to presence of undeclared almond protein in the seasoning mix.

The withdrawal of similar meal kits in the UK has led the UK's Food Safety Agency to investigate suspicions that nuts may have been substituted for cumin seeds because the price of the spice had increased due to a bad harvest.

Prof Chris Elliott,who led the British government’s inquiry into the horse meat scandal, raised the concerns last week and said the implications for nut allergy sufferers were very serious.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland said it was working closely with its counterparts in the UK in the interest of protecting public health.
