The deal reached on Monday night which averted a threatened strike by emergency department nurses is already being closely scrutinised by other public service groups.
One specific issue that will come into focus will be a provision of additional leave for nurses working in emergency units in hospitals.
This additional two days additional leave in 2016 and 2017 is being officially described as “toil” in lieu of meal breaks.
However it remains to be seen as to whether this proposed arrangement can be ring fenced for 1,100 emergency department nurses.
Already some senior figures in other unions have indicated they will be lodging claims for similar measures for their members.
The deal also provides for close to 150 promotions for emergency department nurses to a higher grade known as clinical nurse manager 1.
Sources said there would be one promotional post for every shift. This will add to salary costs however health sources said there will not be other staff taken on to replace those who are promoted. The HSE has declined to state how much the overall emergency department nurse deal will cost or how it will be funded.
