Man airlifted from Tramore beach after cardiac arrest

A man in his 70s was airlifted from Tramore beach yesterday afternoon after suffering a cardiac arrest.

The Irish Coast Guard helicopter search and rescue team was called to Tramore beach in Co Waterford at 12.45pm yesterday after the alarm was raised.

The man was airlifted to a nearby rugby pitch where he was transferred by ambulance to Waterford University Hospital and treated for cardiac arrest.

The identity and condition of the man is unknown.

Temperatures on the southeast coast reached 23 degrees yesterday, while Moorepark near Fermoy in Cork experienced highs of 26 degrees.

The hottest temperature recorded so far in 2014 was in Newport, Co Mayo, where it reached 27.1 degrees on Tuesday.

A spokesman for the Irish Coast Guard said there has been a noticeable spike in callouts in recent weeks as the summer weather set in.

“There have been big issues with people using inflatables in open water,” he said, warning that swimmers should refrain from using inflatable li-los in coastal areas.
