Final day for Wicklow ‘no fry zone’ submissions

Today is the last day for submissions to Wicklow County Council on new planning guidelines about the location of fast food outlets in relation to schools.

The local authority is seeking submissions as part of a new obesity strategy.

Greystones based group No Fry Zones For Kids is calling for a ban on fast food outlets within 400m of primary schools.

Chairman of the group Philip Moyles told Newstalk Breakfast that there is a need for a uniform approach for all local authorities.

“This is a national issue not just a local issue. A number of county councils have already adopted the proposal. But there is a lot of variation. It is important that all county councils have a standard approach.”

Under the amendment proposed by No Fry Zones For Kids outlets that sell food high in fat or salt will be prohibited within 400m of schools. Delicatessens and grocery stores are not included said Mr Moyles.

“We need a practical objective. This is not about closing businesses, it is about tackling obesity.”

He pointed out that the submission is in relation to planning recommendations and will ensure that fast food outlets will not be located close to primary schools.

“This is not about existing businesses. It is about the planning process.”
