ESB, Ireland's main electricity supplier, and Age Action Ireland have launched a booklet for older people with advice on how to stay warm and use energy more efficiently.
According to Age Action Ireland, an independent national network working to make life better for older people, there are about 1,500 to 2,000 excess winter deaths that are largely due to poor housing standards. Overall, 7.5 per cent of all pensioner households experience fuel poverty.
The booklet, called Energy, contains tips on electricity safety, electrical contractors and keeping warm economically. It also explains electricity bills, offers advice on what to do if electricity supply is interrupted and contains useful contact numbers.
"A main aim for Age Action Ireland is make life better for all ageing people, with an emphasis on their right to be included in all aspects of Irish life," said Mr Robin Webster, chief executive of Age Action Ireland. "There are so many elements involved in enhancing their lives, and one of them is adequate heat and energy in their homes."
The booklet, which has an initial print run of 50,000, is available free from ESB shops and Age Action charity shops in Dublin's Camden Street; Castlebar, Co Galway, or by ringing 01 4756989.
