Meanwhile, on Sunday, another 2,338 PCR-confirmed cases of Covid-19 were reported, while a further 2,819 positive antigen tests were recorded through the HSE portal.

The latest figures came amid the lifting of the vast majority of the remaining pandemic restrictions in the State on Monday.

From Monday, there was no longer a legal requirement for mask wearing in environments such as retail, personal services and schools.

Specific protective measures in place in schools and early-learning and school-aged childcare facilities were also being lifted, such as the requirement for pods, social distancing and staggered breaks.

Meanwhile, the North's Department of Health reported on Monday that one more person who had previously recently tested positive for Covid-19 has died in Northern Ireland.

Another 1,908 confirmed cases of the virus have also been notified in the North in its latest 24-hour reporting period.

On Monday morning there were 454 Covid-19 patients in the North’s hospitals, six of whom were in intensive care. Additional reporting: PA
