Covid-19: 32 people died from the virus in past week

There were 32 deaths from Covid-19 in the past week, according to the latest data on fatalities from the coronavirus disease released by the HSE’s Health Protection Surveillance Centre.

The latest deaths took place during the week to Tuesday, bringing to 6,228 the number of deaths since the pandemic began. The deaths were reported to the HPSC on Wednesday.

The mean age of people who died during the period was 80 while the median age was 81.

The latest figures do not include the deaths of people with Covid-19 reported in the past week with an earlier date of death. Further deaths for the week may also yet be reported.

The National Public Health Emergency Team reported 6,061 new PCR-confirmed cases. A further 6,814 people registered a positive antigen test through the HSE portal.

There were 610 people with Covid-19 in hospital at 8am ón Thursday, down from a high of 1,063 during the most recent Omicron wave of infection on January 10th. Of the people in hospital, 63 were in intensive care units, down from 97 in the middle of last month.

Northern Ireland's Department of Health reported three new deaths linked to Covid-19 on Thursday and a further 4,203 new Covid-19 cases.

This brought the number of Covid-related deaths since the start of the pandemic in the North to 3,123.

A total of 556,449 people have tested positive for the virus in Northern Ireland since the pandemic began.

Nphet said on Wednesday that there were 92 deaths related to Covid-19 notified in the State over the previous seven days but some of these deaths predated the most recent reporting week.

Since the start of the pandemic, 83 per cent of all 6,228 deaths were among people with an underlying condition.

The latest data on Covid-19 deaths show that almost three in four deaths were in people aged 75 years or over since the start of the pandemic almost two years ago.

There were just over 1,000 deaths, or 17 per cent of the total, among those aged between 65 and 74 and 401 deaths among people aged between 55 and 64, or 6.4 per cent of total deaths.

There were 241 deaths, or 3.9 per cent of the total, among people aged 54 or younger, including eight people aged under 25 years of age.

Of the total Covid-19 deaths during the pandemic, 54 per cent or 3,341 were men and 46 per cent or 2,887 were women.
