Cape Town - The leader of the party which ruled South Africa during apartheid has suspended the head of its regional branch in the Western Cape for leading a revolt against a merger with the ruling African National Congress (ANC).

The New National Party (NNP) on Wednesday suspended Western Cape Premier Gerald Morkel after he and other provincial party officials refused to support party leader Mr Martinus Van Schalkwyk's negotiations with the ANC toward reaching a co-operation agreement.
