Prague - Czech President Vaclav Havel threw his support yesterday behind news staff at the public Czech Television, who are protesting against the station's new director-general on the grounds that he is politically biased.

The journalists, backed by other employees, unions and a large section of the management, refuse to recognise last week's selection of Mr Jiri Hodac as director general by the lower house-appointed Czech Television Council. They say he was picked by politicians to use the station for their own ends.
