Some 30-40 lorries have congregated at the entrance of the Castlebar Roadstone quarry in Mayo today in protest over rates of pay.

The action was taken by the independent hauliers after talks between themselves and Roadstone failed last night.

Further talks between the sides were held this evening however no definite outcome was reached and the hauliers have decided to continue their protest.

The dispute arises from new restrictions imposed on hauliers over the amount of cargo they are entitled to carry.

It is understood that the hauliers were unsatisfied with a new rate offered last night and say they must have increased rates if they are to comply with the new restrictions on the amount they can carry.

The hauliers are due to discuss their strategy later this evening.
