London - British teachers were said to be rejoicing yesterday after the chief inspector of schools announced his resignation.

Mr Chris Woodhead (54) was for six years head of the body which sends inspectors into schools to check on teachers' work. His uncompromising approach was lauded by the Tories, who appointed him in 1994.
