Minister for Health Mary Harney will launch a public consultation today on a proposed legal rescritions on the use of sunbeds.
People will be asked to give their views on new laws to control and regulate the use of the tanning machines over fears about their potential to cause cancer.
Measures planned include a ban on under 18s using sunbeds, controls on their sale and rental and regulation of supervision at tanning booths.
Officials are also considering making warning labels mandatory.
People will also be invited to respond to proposed exemptions for medical use, inspections to ensure compliance and registration of sunbed providers with a competent authority.
Notices are to be taken out in national newspapers asking for people to give their views to the Department of Health and Children.
