Campaigners against a housing and redevelopment scheme at Greystones harbour have differed over the nomination of a candidate for the forthcoming general election.
The Greystones Protection and Development Association (GPDA) recently took out advertising space in The Irish Timesannouncing its intention to endorse "an independent candidate who will better represent the views of the people of Wicklow in relation to physical, social and community planning in the county".
Spokeswoman Evelyn Cawley - who was widely expected to be that candidate - said the name of the individual would be revealed within the next few weeks.
However, other members of the association are known to be unhappy about endorsing a single candidate.
At a meeting of the association's committee last week they failed to reach unanimity on the subject.
It is understood some members expressed concern the strategy may disappoint supporters of other general election candidates who had in turn supported the aims of the association.
Labour TD Liz McManus and the Green Party councillor Deirdre de Burca, in particular, have been vocal in their support of the harbour group and will be standing in the next general election.
Ms McManus said her understanding was that the association "would support all candidates which supported it". But she said it was fully entitled to nominate who it liked. She added that the members "know who has supported them".
